The second Snow and Winter book continues in a vein of crazy murderous New Yorkers obsessed with Sebastian Snow, antique dealer. And Sebastian Snow crazily following the beck and call of a serial killer, intrigued with "solving puzzles." His boyfriend, Calvin Winters, suffering from PTSD, is repeatedly stunned by Sebastian's lunatic mystery addiction (as are we all), and eventually has to shoot people on multiple occasions to keep Sebastian alive. Not so good for Cal's PTSD. It's a little bit of a Scooby Doo pastiche with snips from a number of other mm mystery stories/styles (e.g., Josh Lanyon, Jordan Castillo Price)If you liked the first book, despite it's loose/easy to solve plot, you will like this one. It is a little romance leavening a little mystery, which is my favorite combo.Some ratings on things of interest to me in mm romanceSmexy Scale.1-5: 4Couple of hot explicit scenes; (warning, these two are not the smoothest talkers in bed.)Humor Scale 1-5:3Not as funny as the first one, I think. Max, Sebastian's shop assistant, is growing as an interesting funny character...I liked those two teaming up.Angst Scale 1-5:2Calvin is really struggling with PTSD and managing symptoms. We have one scene with him feeling overwhelmed and, ongoing, Sebastian's worry about him.Likable MCs scale 1-5:4Like these guys, they are caring and kind with each other. Cal really should lock Sebastian up before Cal's career as a cop is blown sky high by his hanging with a nutcase.Like mystery and zany in your mm romance?Then I also recommendJosh Lanyon's Holmes and Moriarity seriesLB Gregg's Romano and Allbright seriesMary Calmes' Marshals' SeriesLike your snark rate high in mystery/mm romance?I recommend Jordan Castillo Price's Psycop Series (science fiction) Other than the fact of Sebastian Snow undergoing such trauma so soon after his LAST trauma, this second in the Snow & Winter series was wonderful all the way through.Sebastian is irritating as hell, but also smart, interesting, and hyper-aware of his feelings. His big lumbering redhead of a boyfriend, Detective Calvin Winter (Ex-U.S. Army major), is a badly broken man, but has responded miraculously to the restorative power of Sebastian’s love. Now all Calvin has to do is to keep Sebastian from running headlong into danger. Every single damn day.I don’t know if Carol Poe knows New York firsthand or not, but she gives it a vitality and an intensity that I recognize from long familiarity. This particular book is full of museums—museums I know well as a lifelong curator (who obsesses about old curiosities, so Sebastian is a kindred spirit). But there’s also a ghost museum and a series of murders, each one aimed at Sebastian, that suck Sebastian and Calvin into a mystery that gets more unsettling at each twist of the plot. Strangely enough, the linking oddity—references to the devastating fire at P.T. Barnum’s American Museum in the 19th century—resonates with me, too. As it happens, my great-great-grandfather did all the gas lighting for Barnum’s museum and auditorium. Barnum has fascinated me for decades (and has his own museum in Bridgeport CT).Sebastian’s loving, long-suffering father has a significant role in this book, as the man who protected his fragile son in his youth, and worries about him now. His acceptance of Calvin into his son’s life is heart-warming and really touching, in contrast to Calvin’s family who have all but cut him off for daring to finally live his life honestly.Calvin is my favorite character of all, and not just because he’s a redhead (which of course Sebastian can’t see because of his rare total color blindness). Calvin understands that Sebastian is the bright light at the end of his tunnel of misery. He knows he has a long road to travel, but also knows that Sebastian will help him every step of the way. If he can keep him out of trouble.Sebastian, for his part, can only see the world in shades of gray, and I love that as a literalized metaphor. He doesn’t see color; but he doesn’t see in black and white either. Everything, for Sebastian, is nuance. Because he is not distracted by color, it might just be that he sees what’s really there.I’ve bought the third book in this series already.
